Why the need
For Safety's Sake - Check your Tyres!

The correct tyre pressures on your vehicle are critical!

The sad truth is that basic safety lessons hammered into learner drivers are forgotten over the years as we become numbed by the routine of daily driving. And yet checking tyre pressure is in every driver's own best interest.

Tyre manufactures, remind us: - "We should always bear in mind that our lives and those of our passengers are riding on four footprint-sized surfaces that connect us to the road."

Everybody knows they should check their tyre pressure, but most motorists glaze over the topic when it comes up. Be honest - how often do you remember to do it? Spoiled by electronic monitoring and control systems in newer cars, today's car owners often forget that tyre pressure is the only thing drivers still physically have to check themselves.

However, according to recent research from Bridgestone Europe, only 6% of drivers check their tyre-pressure correctly.

Potential Risks

When air pressure is low, tyres become deformed and optimal contact with the road is lost. Steering becomes less responsive and the vehicle may skid or spin on corners or when swerving to avoid an obstacle. On wet surfaces, tyre deformation due to insufficient pressure dramatically raises the risk of aquaplaning.

It's critical to also note that low air pressure reduces the efficiency of expensive electronic safety systems such as ESP (Electronic Stability Program) and ABS (Anti-Lock Braking).

What your tyres do

Your tyres, each with a contact patch on the road of about the size of a large footprint, are essential in providing grip for

  • Steering
  • Braking
  • Acceleration
  • Improved comfort

The secret to keeping tyres in good condition, providing optimum performance and increasing life-expectancy is air pressure. It's the air pressure that keeps tyres safe and balances the weight of the vehicle, not the rubber or casing material.
