facts & Statistics

Percentage of Motor Vehicles with Under-Inflated Tyres

During February 2001 a survey conducted by NASS-CDS crash investigators measured tyre pressure on each vehicle coming into a local fuel station and compared the measured pressures to the vehicle's correct (pace card) pressure.

They found that:-

36% of passenger cars and about 40% of light trucks had at least one tyre that was at least 20% below the correct pressure.

26% of passenger cars and 29% of light trucks had at least one tyre that was at least 25% below the correct pressure.

With us "British" being amongst the worst offenders.

A survey by Michelin shows 30% of Britain's car drivers rely on the garage servicing their vehicle for their tyre pressure checks or only ever check them before a long journey.

When asked 85% of car drivers didn't even know the correct tyre pressure for their vehicle.

Anyone who has ever driven in France will know that it is a very different story there. "The French are obsessed with tyre pressures. If there is no fog or other obvious danger to be flagged on the electronic signboards on French motorways, they carry warnings about tyre pressure: "Pneus sous-gonfler = Danger" (under-inflated tyres = danger) and "Controller vos Pneus" (check your tyres).

Not surprising when statistics from Renault indicate that…

6% of all fatal motorway accidents in France are caused by the sudden failure of under-inflated tyres (that is 600 avoidable deaths).

There are, also on average, 10 deaths on our UK roads every day.

Over 10,000 injuries and countless deaths could be prevented by monitoring tyre pressures. That's the estimate of the NHTSA, the US Transportation Department agency responsible for vehicle safety.

The US government has proposed a new rule mandating that all vehicles made after November 2003 have systems to warn drivers about low tyre pressure.

This is in response to last year's recall of 6.5 million Firestone tyres.

Most motorists insist that adequately inflated tyres are "very important" to both safety and car performance.

But...

Despite the importance of tyres to our safety when travelling, surveys have frequently shown that we compromise safety by driving cars with incorrect tyre pressures.

Plus ... don't forget that there are also financial aspects of NOT monitoring tyre pressure ... increased fuel consumption, pollution, and increased tyre (and engine) wear!

Our new safety equipment ensures your tyres are at their proper pressure with one quick and easy glance.
